top 5 routes in mallorca
Mallorca is packed with incredible cycling, but when it comes to unforgettable roads, climbs, and views, the Serra de Tramuntana is where the magic really happens. I’ve pulled together my top 5 cycling routes on the island - a mix of lengths, locations, and difficulty levels - all from personal experience. If you're planning a trip and want the best bang for your buck (or your legs), this is where to start.
Each of these rides is circular (or close to it), so you can adjust based on where you're staying. And yes, I’ve included links to Strava route files - just remember to tweak for your start point.
Let’s dive in.
5. The Orient Valley Loop
Distance: ~135 km
Elevation: ~2,100 m
Best For: A big, varied day out through classic climbs and hidden valleys
This is a long day in the saddle and a personal favourite. Starting in the north, you’ll warm up with the 9km Coll de Femenia — a scenic and relatively gentle climb with lunar-like landscapes. From there, stop at the Repsol garage (a cyclist rite of passage) before riding the rolling, smooth MA10 past Sa Calobra (add it if you dare).
Then comes Puig Major — the island’s tallest mountain — climbed from the north side at a steady 5.5% over 5km. What follows is the best descent on Mallorca: 14km of fast, flowing corners down to Sóller. Take a break, grab a slice of cake, and prep yourself for the big one: the Coll de Sóller.
The northern ascent has 16 switchbacks and barely any traffic thanks to a new tunnel below. The descent on the southern side is more technical, so take your time. From there, you’ll ride through Bunyola, climb the Coll d’Honor, and descend into the lush Orient Valley before rolling back north via quiet backroads.
Tip: Ride this one anti-clockwise. The climbs flow better and you’ll get the Puig Major descent instead of the slog.
4. The Garage Loop
Distance: ~65 km
Elevation: ~800 m
Best For: A classic Mallorcan ride that fits into a half day
The Garage Loop is short, scenic, and satisfying — perfect if you're looking for a solid ride without a full-day commitment. Depending on your start, you’ll either tackle quiet country lanes toward Campanet before climbing the Coll de sa Batalla, or ride the MA10 to Coll de Femenia.
The sa Batalla climb is a beauty: 8km at 5% through forests and open views. Refuel at the Repsol garage, which has a surprisingly good independent cafe. From there, it’s a steady cruise to the top of Femenia, then an epic descent back to where you started.
Bonus: You can add Sa Calobra to this loop — just head south on the MA10 from the garage. Be warned though: it’s 40km and 1,500m more.
3. Southern MA10 Coastal Loop
Distance: ~65 km
Elevation: ~1,500 m
Best For: Coastal views, rolling climbs, and quiet roads
Starting from Banyalbufar and heading south, this is possibly the most beautiful stretch of road in Mallorca. The MA10 hugs the coastline, with uninterrupted views over cliffs and sea. The ride undulates over several lesser-known climbs, before heading inland to Galilea and Es Grau, both averaging around 5%.
Expect smooth tarmac, quiet roads, and endless photo stops. If you’re based in Palma, tack on an out-and-back for a bigger day.
Optional Detour: Feeling brave? Add the infamous climb of Sobremunt. It’s brutally steep (20%+ gradients) and rough, but an unforgettable test piece.
2. The Lighthouse Ride
Distance: ~40 km
Elevation: ~900 m
Best For: Short but spectacular morning rides
This iconic out-and-back from Port de Pollença to Cap de Formentor might be the best pound-for-pound ride on Earth. You’ll start with the Coll de la Creueta, climbing gently for 3km with knockout views over the bay. Descend through tight switchbacks to Formentor Beach, then continue climbing towards the lighthouse.
The road hugs cliffs, tunnels through rock, and winds along the edge of the sea. It's a rollercoaster of a ride, and every inch is beautiful.
Watch Out: In high season, traffic can be heavy. Ride early or late to avoid the rental car slalom.
1. The Full MA10
Distance: ~115 km
Elevation: ~2,100 m
Best For: The ultimate Mallorca cycling experience
This is it. The crown jewel. The full-length MA10 takes you from Andratx in the southwest to Pollença in the north — or vice versa — through nearly every iconic stretch of road the Tramuntana has to offer.
Start with the gentle Coll de Sa Gramola and enjoy 50km of coastal riding on flawless tarmac. Tackle climbs like Coll de Claret and Coll d’en Bleda before descending into Sóller. From there, it’s up Puig Major and down through Gorg Blau and past Sa Calobra. Finish strong with Coll de Femenia.
Logistics Tip: Use the Mallorca Cycle Shuttle to start in Andratx and make it a point-to-point adventure.
These routes are a great way to experience the best of Mallorca. Whether you want a mellow half-day cruise or a bucket list epic, there’s something here for every kind of rider. Want to ride one of these with me? Get in touch!
