Renting a Bike in Mallorca: What You Need to Know
Mallorca is one of the world’s top cycling destinations — and for good reason. With its smooth roads, warm climate, mountain climbs, and bike-friendly infrastructure, the island is a dream for both casual riders and serious athletes.
If you’re not bringing your own bike, don’t worry — renting in Mallorca is easy, affordable, and often more convenient than flying with your own. But there are a few important things to keep in mind to ensure you get the most out of your trip.
1. Choose the Right Type of Bike
Mallorca caters to all types of riders, so most rental shops offer a full range of options:
Road bikes – Ideal for long days in the Tramuntana mountains or coastal loops. Carbon frames and electronic shifting are widely available.
Gravel or endurance bikes – Perfect if you’re venturing onto rougher roads or want something more comfortable over long distances.
Mountain bikes - For, ya know, going off-road down mountains.
Electric bikes (e-bikes) – A great option if you're recovering from injury, riding with mixed abilities, or just want a more relaxed day out.
Hybrids and leisure bikes – Best for shorter, flatter routes or family rides.
💡 Tip: If you’re planning to tackle climbs like Sa Calobra, Puig Major or Sobremunt, you’ll want a proper road bike with compact gearing.
2. Book in Advance — Especially in Spring
Spring (March to May) and Autumn (September, October) are Mallorca’s peak cycling seasons. Many of the best rental bikes - especially over 312 weekend — get booked months in advance.
If you're travelling during these months, reserve early online to secure your preferred bike, size, and setup.
3. Know Your Fit and Measurements
To make the most of your rental:
Supply your ABC measurements (stack/reach, saddle height, handlebar position) when booking, and double check the stores measurement methodology as these can vary - some measuring saddle height from bottom bracket, some from pedal - for example.
Know your frame size in your preferred brand (e.g. 54cm, Medium)
Consider bringing your own saddle, especially if you’re particular about comfort.
You’ll need to bring your own pedals, or at least, it’s cheaper and easier if you do.
Most shops are happy to fit your accessories and make minor adjustments on arrival.
4. Check What’s Included
Every shop offers different extras, so check carefully:
✅ What’s usually included:
Pump
Saddlebag with tube/levers
Basic multi-tool
Bottle cages
❌ What’s often not included (but can be rented or brought from home):
Helmet
Bottles
Pedals
GPS mount
Lock
Lights
Some shops also offer insurance options for theft or damage (and even breakdown) - worth considering depending on the value of the bike and your travel insurance policy.
5. Shop Reputation Matters
Mallorca has plenty of reputable rental shops — especially in popular cycling hubs like Port de Pollença, Alcúdia, Sóller, and Palma. My favourite is, of course, Bike Island Mallorca. Use code SAM5.
Read reviews, check for hidden fees, and confirm whether the bike will be ready and pre-set for your arrival.
6. Consider Delivery & Collection
Some rental services now offer bike delivery to your accommodation, which is useful if you’re staying outside a major town or don’t want to drive to collect it. This can be especially handy if you're travelling without a hire car.
7. Don’t Forget the Rules of the Road
Helmets are mandatory outside urban areas
Cyclists should use the hard shoulder where possible.
Use lights if riding before sunrise or after sunset
Mallorca drivers are generally courteous, but stay alert, especially on narrow inland roads
Headphones are not allowed (€200 fine!)
And always carry ID, a phone, and basic spares with you.
In Summary
Renting a bike in Mallorca is a great way to explore the island without the hassle of flying with your own. Just remember to:
Book early in peak season
Bring your fit measurements and pedals
Check what’s included
Choose a reputable shop
Match your bike to your riding plans
