renting or flying your bike

Ah, the eternal cycling holiday dilemma: do you bring your beloved steed along for the ride, or rent something locally and travel light? Here’s a no-nonsense guide based on experience, hassle, and, of course, budget.

Fly Your Bike — Yes, If…

  • You’re staying in Mallorca for 5 days or more. Once you hit this point, it’s generally cheaper to bring your own bike, especially if you already own a box.

  • You’re particular about your setup — saddle height, bar width, crank length. Shops will take your ABC measurements and dit you as best as possible, but some people are particular.

  • You already own a bike box. Renting one can cost ~£10/day, but if you’ve already shelled out for a proper case, it can be worth using.

Cons of Flying Your Bike

  • It’s a bit of a faff. Packing, unpacking, re-packing, re-re-packing…

  • Transfers are trickier. Not all taxis or buses take bike boxes. You’ll need to book ahead or hire a larger vehicle.

  • Damage risk. Even with the best cases, bikes do occasionally get dinged in transit. It happens.

Renting a Bike in Mallorca — Actually a Brilliant Option

Mallorca’s local rental scene is world-class. Clean bikes, great service, and loads of choice. For most people, especially first-time visitors, renting is the smart move.

Pros of Renting

  • Support local businesses. Better to give your money to a bike shop than an airline.

  • Top-tier bikes. From Di2 to carbon wheels, there’s plenty of high-spec gear to try.

  • Breakdown cover. Most shops offer some kind of roadside support, either included or paid.

  • No airport stress. No lugging your bike case across terminals or squeezing it into a hire car.

  • Surprisingly good fit. Shops like Bike Island Mallorca will request your measurements and get you set up perfectly.

Cons of Renting

  • Price can creep up after 5–6 days. If you’re here for longer, flying in might start to make sense financially.

  • Availability issues in peak season. Plan ahead — especially in March-May and September-October.

Airline Bike Fees (As of June 2025)

Always double-check airline policies before flying. Bike fees change more than your weekly training plan.

TL;DR: What Should You Do?

  • Under a week? Rent. It’s easier, more convenient, and supports a local shop.

  • Over a week? Flying might save you money, especially if you already own a bike case.

  • Fussy about fit or gear? Fly your own.

  • Want less admin, more coffee stops? Rent.
